The word "martyr" comes from the Greek word martys, meaning "witness." Originally, it referred specifically to those who stood by their faith even unto death; early Christians facing Roman persecution for refusing to renounce their religion are the classic examples. Over time, however, the definition broadened. Today, a martyr is often understood as someone who suffers greatly or dies because of their principles, whether those beliefs are religious, political, or social.

This suffering does not always have to be physical; it can also be emotional, social, or professional. Someone might be seen as a martyr for enduring constant criticism or career setbacks while standing up for an unpopular truth. The key element of martyrdom isn't simply the act of suffering, but the reason behind it: a strong commitment to something larger than oneself. This often earns the person admiration, as seen in people described as "martyrs for science," who risked their lives to advance human knowledge.

In modern psychology and casual conversation, the term has also developed a more critical meaning. A "martyr complex" describes someone who regularly seeks out suffering or overworks themselves to feel morally superior or to make others feel guilty. Despite these varied uses, from the ancient hero to the modern office colleague, the word still points to the weight of conviction and the sacrifice a person is willing to endure for their values.
