The word "fill" has many meanings, and most of them center on the idea of using empty space or meeting a need. At its most basic, it means to make something full, like filling a bucket with water ("Please fill this bucket up!") or filling a car with gas ("I need to fill up the tank before our road trip.").

But "fill" goes beyond physical objects. You can fill time with activities ("We filled the afternoon by exploring the museum."), fill a job or position ("The company needs someone to fill the manager's role."), or affect someone's feelings ("His kindness filled me with hope.").

As a verb, "fill" can also mean to complete something. You might fill out a form, fill in missing information, or fill a prescription at the pharmacy. In these cases, the idea is to finish what is needed.

The word can also be used in a more figurative way to show that something spreads widely. For example, "News of the victory filled the city." This suggests that the news reached everywhere and took up people's attention.
