To tease most often means to make fun of someone in a playful way or to keep bothering them lightly to get a reaction. In everyday life, this can be affectionate and friendly: children tease each other, friends tease one another about habits, and couples may tease in a warm, joking way. But the line is thin. If the joke is too sharp, repeated too often, or aimed at a real weakness, it stops feeling playful and starts to feel cruel. That is why teasing depends so much on tone, relationship, and timing.

The word also has a strong sense of tempting or hinting without fully giving something. A film studio may tease a new release by showing only a few seconds. Someone may tease a surprise and refuse to explain it yet. In a more personal sense, a person can tease by acting in a way that attracts interest or desire without fully responding. In all of these uses, the word carries the idea of drawing someone in while holding something back.

There are also practical meanings. To tease hair is to comb it in a way that makes it fuller by pushing sections back toward the scalp. To tease fibers apart is to separate them gently. And the phrase "tease out" means to bring something out slowly and carefully, such as teasing out a knot, a hidden meaning, or a key fact from a confusing set of details. Across these uses, the word suggests light pulling, provoking, or drawing out rather than force.
