A needle is most commonly known as a slender, pointed piece of metal or other material used for sewing. It features a tiny hole, called the eye, through which thread is passed to stitch fabrics together. For centuries, needles have been essential tools for creating clothing, repairing textiles, and crafting beautiful embroidery. "She carefully threaded the needle and began to mend the tear in her jeans."

However, the meaning of "needle" extends far beyond the sewing kit. In medicine, a needle refers to a small, hollow tube used to inject fluids into the body or withdraw blood. This is how vaccines are administered or how doctors draw samples for testing. "The nurse gently inserted the needle into his arm to administer the flu shot." In nature, the word describes the narrow, stiff leaves of coniferous trees, like pine needles. It also refers to the slender pointers on instruments such as compasses and speedometers, which "point" the way to a measurement.

Interestingly, "needle" can also be used as a verb! To needle someone means to persistently tease, pester, or question them—like poking at them with words. This usage evokes the image of something small and irritating constantly bothering you. "He kept needling her about her new haircut until she finally snapped."

Historically, needles were fashioned from bone, wood, or thorns before metalworking became common. Today, they are often manufactured from stainless steel for durability and hygiene. So, whether it's a tool for creation, a medical instrument, a part of a tree, or a form of playful (or annoying!) interaction, the humble needle is a surprisingly versatile word with a rich history and many applications.
