justify

B2
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /dʒˈʌstɪfˌaɪ/

US

  • /ˈdʒəstəˌfaɪ/

Description

Imagine you decide to buy an expensive new laptop. To justify the cost to yourself or your family, you explain that it is an important tool for your work and will last for years. To justify something is to show or prove that it is right, reasonable, or necessary. It means giving clear reasons for an action, especially when other people may question or criticize it. You might justify a hard decision at work by pointing to its long-term benefits, or a government might justify a new policy by using numbers to show that it works. In the end, a justification shows that your choice was based on reasons, not just on impulse.
