To rationalize means to find reasons or justifications for actions, beliefs, or feelings that might otherwise seem illogical, unreasonable, or unacceptable. It's the process of creating seemingly logical explanations to defend choices or behaviors, often unconsciously. For example: "He rationalized his cheating by claiming everyone else was doing it," or "She rationalized her fear of flying with statistics about airline safety."

Rationalization isn't always a deliberate attempt to deceive others; more often, it's a self-deceptive process we use to reduce cognitive dissonance—the mental discomfort caused by holding conflicting beliefs. If you believe in being honest but tell a white lie, you might rationalize it by saying it was necessary to spare someone's feelings. In psychology, this is considered a defense mechanism—a way to protect our ego from anxiety or guilt. While it can provide temporary relief, excessive rationalization can prevent us from learning from our mistakes.

The term comes from "ratio," suggesting an attempt to bring logic and reason into a situation. This leads to a second major use case: making a system or process more efficient. In business, to rationalize often means to streamline operations, such as cutting redundant departments or consolidating resources to make a company more "rational" and profitable. In mathematics, it involves removing radicals from an equation to make it simpler to work with.
