heighten

To heighten means to increase the intensity or degree of something, making it more noticeable, stronger, or more important. It is often used when describing emotions, sensations, or risks. For example: "The approaching storm heightened our sense of urgency," or "His words heightened her suspicions."

Heighten suggests taking something that already exists and making it stronger. A skilled storyteller can heighten the drama in a scene through careful pacing and vivid descriptions. A good teacher might heighten students' curiosity by asking questions that make them want to know more.

The word is not limited to positive experiences, though. It can also describe negative or dangerous situations becoming more severe. "The lack of rain heightened the risk of wildfires" means the danger increased because the conditions were dry.

Interestingly, "heighten" comes from the same root as "high," which gives a sense of raising something to a higher level. You might raise a flag, but you heighten awareness. One is about physical movement, and the other is about making something less direct, like a feeling or sense, stronger.
