To escalate means for something to increase rapidly in intensity, severity, or extent. It often implies a progression from a lower to a higher level, frequently with negative consequences. While it can be used in neutral contexts (like escalating a technical issue to a senior specialist), it's most commonly associated with conflict, crises, and problems that are getting worse.

For example, "The protests escalated into violent clashes with police," means the peaceful demonstrations grew more intense and turned destructive. Or, "The company's financial troubles began to escalate after a series of bad investments."

Escalation isn't always intentional. Sometimes it happens gradually, as small issues accumulate and build upon each other.
