flow

Flow describes the smooth, continuous movement of something—whether it's physical, like water, air, or traffic, or more abstract, like ideas, energy, or time. Imagine a gentle stream winding through a forest; that's flow in its most literal sense. "The river's flow was strong after the rain."

But flow extends far beyond liquids. It can describe the progression of events: "The meeting had a good flow, with each topic building on the last." Or it can refer to the ease and grace with which someone performs an action: "Her dance movements were fluid and full of flow."

Psychologists even use flow to describe a state of complete absorption in an activity—a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment. When you're "in the flow," time seems to disappear, and you're completely immersed in what you're doing. This is often experienced by athletes, artists, or anyone deeply engaged in a challenging but manageable task.

The word can also be used as a verb: "Ideas flowed freely during the brainstorming session." It is also used to describe quantity: "a steady flow of customers."

So whether it's water rushing down a river, ideas sparking in your mind, or a feeling of effortless energy—flow is all about smooth, continuous movement and progression. It's that sense of being carried along by something powerful and natural.
