To circulate means to move around freely and continuously, often within a defined space or system. It describes a flowing, cyclical motion—like blood circulating through veins, air circulating in a room, or water circulating in a closed fountain. For example, you might say, "The waiter circulated among the guests offering drinks," or "News of the scandal quickly circulated throughout the town."

Beyond physical movement, "circulate" frequently describes the spreading of information, ideas, or physical objects. A petition might be circulated for signatures, a magazine is circulated to its subscribers, and rumors often circulate through gossip networks. A library book can also circulate as it’s borrowed, returned, and borrowed again. In these contexts, the word implies that the object is passing from person to person.

In professional and financial contexts, the word takes on a more formal tone. "The report was circulated to all department heads" means it was distributed for review. In economics, money is said to circulate within a system as it is spent, earned, and re-spent. Historically, the word is rooted in the idea of a circular path or "circuit."
