The word comes from an Old French word meaning "fight," but its usage has broadened over time to encompass any challenging contest. A legal battle is fought in courtrooms, and a political battle happens through debate and campaigning. Sometimes, winning the battle isn't about total victory, but simply enduring until it's over.

The word "battle" most immediately conjures images of armed conflict – soldiers clashing on a field, ships engaging at sea, or even a duel between knights. This is its original and core meaning: a physical fight between opposing forces with the intent to win. "The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the American Civil War."

However, "battle" has expanded far beyond literal warfare. It now describes any strenuous struggle or contest against opposition.
