abysmal

"Abysmal" comes from "abyss," a word for a seemingly bottomless depth. Over time, "abysmal" evolved to describe anything of such low quality that it evokes that same sense of depth and despair. It's stronger than simply saying something is "bad" or "poor." (Less commonly, it can also mean extremely deep in a literal sense, as in "the abysmal depths.")

You'd use "abysmal" when describing a truly terrible situation, performance, or condition. For example: "The restaurant received abysmal reviews after the health inspector found numerous violations." Or, "His attempt at baking a cake resulted in an abysmal mess—it was inedible!" It often implies a complete and utter failure, something so far below expectations that it's almost shocking.

While you might say a movie is "bad," you'd likely describe a truly awful film as having "abysmal acting" or an "abysmal plot." It suggests a depth of awfulness that goes beyond simple disappointment. It can also be used figuratively to describe someone's behavior: "His treatment of his employees was abysmal."

So, if something is so bad it feels like falling into the void, you're likely dealing with something truly abysmal.
