adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˌʌndɪfˈaɪnd/

  • /ˌəndɪˈfaɪnd/

Description

"Undefined" often feels like a mathematical mystery. It usually appears when a problem hits a wall, like when you try to divide a number by zero. In math, an undefined result means the operation does not have a valid answer within the rules. But the word is not just for math. Something is "undefined" if its meaning is unclear or has not been decided yet. A character in a movie might have an "undefined" reason for acting a certain way, leaving us guessing. Or if a company's role for a new employee is still "undefined," it means the details have not been worked out yet.
