Tension is not only about ropes being pulled tight. It can be the strain in your muscles when you are worried, or the uneasy silence before a big argument. Think of a stretched rubber band: that is physical tension. But it also appears between people, like when two characters in a story are in conflict, or when a movie scene makes you wait for something bad to happen. A good storyteller builds tension to keep you interested. You might feel tension before an exam, notice it in a suspenseful scene, or sense it when someone is hiding something.

Tension describes a state of strain, stress, or unresolved conflict. It can be physical – like the tightness in your shoulders when you're stressed, or the pull on a rope. "The climber felt the tension in his muscles as he scaled the cliff."

But more often, we talk about emotional or psychological tension. This is the feeling of unease, anxiety, or anticipation that arises from difficult situations or relationships. "There was palpable tension in the room after the accusation." It's what makes a mystery novel gripping – the author carefully builds tension by hinting at danger and withholding information.

Tension can also exist between people. A strained relationship is full of tension, often stemming from disagreements or unspoken feelings. "The tension between them was so thick you could cut it with a knife." This kind of tension might lead to conflict, but it doesn't always – sometimes it just simmers beneath the surface.

In physics and engineering, tension refers to the pulling force carried through a string, rope, cable, or similar object when it is pulled at both ends.

So whether it's a physical force, an emotional state, or a narrative device, tension is about opposing forces creating a sense of strain, anticipation, and potential for change. It's that feeling of something being stretched to the limit – waiting to snap, or finally release.
