US

  • /prəˈpɔrʃənəl/

Description

Think of building with LEGO bricks - if you want your castle to look right, the number of towers needs to match the size of the walls. It means things are connected in a balanced way, based on their size or amount. A map is proportional when distances on the map keep the same scale as real distances.

If you earn $20 an hour, your pay should be proportional to the number of hours you work - more hours mean more money. Sometimes it is about fairness: if three people share a pizza, each person getting a slice based on how much they paid feels right. You can also use "proportional" in math to describe ratios and relationships between amounts.
