popular

A2
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /pˈɒpjʊlə/

US

  • /ˈpɑpjələr/

Description

Something "popular" is enjoyed by many people. Think of your favorite song on the radio: if everyone seems to be listening to it, it's popular. It doesn't just apply to music, though. A popular restaurant will have a long line out the door, and a popular opinion is one that most people agree with. It can also describe something many people choose or visit, like a popular tourist destination. Being popular isn't always about being the best; it simply means many people enjoy, choose, or recognize something.
