must

A1
verbnounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /mˈʌst/

US

  • /ˈməst/

Description

"Must" is a strong word. It often shows that something is necessary, required, or very important to do. Think of a doctor telling you, "You must take this medicine," or a sign saying, "Employees must wear safety goggles."

"Must" can also show a strong belief or conclusion. If you see someone rushing around with flour all over their face, you might say, "They must be baking a cake!" That is your best guess from what you can see. Sometimes it is about what is required: "You must have a valid driver's license to operate this vehicle." And sometimes it shows a strong personal feeling: "I must see that movie!"
