The word "isolate" carries a strong sense of separation. At its core, it means to set something apart and keep it away from others. That separation can happen in several different ways.

In a physical sense, you might isolate a patient with a contagious disease to stop an infection from spreading. In science, researchers isolate a substance, cell, or virus so they can study it more clearly. A remote village can also be isolated because it is far away and hard to reach.

But the idea is not always physical. A person can feel isolated even in a crowd if they feel emotionally cut off and alone. Someone might isolate themselves by pulling away from friends, family, or social situations.

The word also has a problem-solving meaning. To isolate a variable in an experiment means to look at its effect without other factors getting in the way. More generally, if you isolate a cause, error, or detail, you separate it from everything else so you can understand it better.
