Imagine standing in front of a powerful person, a hostile group, or even a challenge that feels much bigger than you expected. Your voice tightens, your confidence drops, and you suddenly feel less sure of yourself. That is the feeling behind intimidate. It means to make someone feel afraid, nervous, or not confident enough to speak or act normally.

Often, this happens because someone is using power, pressure, or a threatening manner. A bully may intimidate other children. A boss may intimidate workers by speaking harshly. A lawyer, guard, or official may intimidate someone simply through tone, posture, or authority. In cases like these, the word suggests fear mixed with pressure, and sometimes there is a clear attempt to control another person's behavior.

But the word is also used more broadly. Not every case involves a direct threat or bad intent. A very talented opponent can intimidate a new player. A large audience can intimidate a shy speaker. A difficult exam, a complex machine, or an unfamiliar city can feel intimidating because they seem overwhelming. In these examples, the main idea is not bullying but the feeling of being overpowered or daunted.

The word is useful because it covers both sides: active pressure from others and the inner feeling of being overawed. It is stronger than simply saying something is "scary." It usually carries a sense of pressure, imbalance, or lost confidence. Someone who feels intimidated may go quiet, back away, avoid eye contact, or decide not to try at all.
