The word "halt" means to stop or to make something stop. It often sounds firmer and more sudden than the ordinary word "stop." If production at a factory is halted by a power outage, the idea is that work does not slowly fade out; it stops because something interrupts it. In the same way, a guard who shouts "Halt!" is giving a direct command for someone to stop moving at once.

As a verb, "halt" can be used for physical movement, ongoing activity, or progress of any kind. A driver may halt at a red light. Heavy rain may halt a game. A company may halt a plan after seeing new risks. It also works in less literal situations, such as when fear halts a decision or new evidence halts an argument. In each case, something that was moving forward is stopped.

"Halt" can also be a noun. You can say that a car came to a halt, meaning it stopped moving, or that travel resumed after a short halt, meaning there was a pause before things started again. This noun use is common in everyday writing when someone wants a slightly formal way to describe a stop.

The word often carries a sense of control, urgency, or interruption. Sometimes the stop is temporary, as when work halts during a storm. Sometimes it feels more final, as when a project is halted because funding disappears. There is also an older meaning related to limping, but that use is now rare and usually separate from the common meaning about stopping.

So when you use "halt," you are usually talking about a clear stop in movement, action, or progress, often one that feels direct, sudden, or deliberate.
