It is different from a lasting trend because it burns brightly and then fades fast. People often join in because everyone around them seems excited about it.

Sometimes companies try to start one through marketing, hoping to make the most of a short burst of interest. But many of them seem to rise naturally and catch people's attention almost overnight, only to lose it just as fast.

While marketers often try to create them, they are hard to predict. A real fad usually catches on quickly and then fades away just as quickly, leaving behind memories and maybe a few forgotten collectibles. So if you find yourself caught up in a new craze, enjoy it while it lasts, but do not expect it to stay for long.
