"Hype" is a word for intense excitement and publicity built around something such as a product, event, person, or idea. It is more than ordinary interest. It suggests a strong push to make people notice something, talk about it, and look forward to it. Think of the weeks before a big tech launch, when leaks, teasers, interviews, and nonstop posts seem to be everywhere. That is hype in action.

The word is often used as a noun, as in "There is a lot of hype around that game." It is also common as a verb, meaning to promote something in a very excited way: a brand can hype a new phone, or friends can hype a singer before a concert. In many cases, the word has a slightly doubtful feeling. It often suggests exaggeration, overpromotion, or excitement that may be bigger than the reality. If someone says something is "all hype," they usually mean it does not live up to what people were led to expect.

Still, hype is not always negative. Sometimes it simply means real excitement spreading quickly. Musicians use it before tours, game studios use it before a release, sports fans create it before a big match, and social media can turn a small trend into a major one overnight. Even so, the word often carries the idea that the attention has been pushed hard or has grown larger than the thing itself. So when you hear that something is "hyped" or that people are "hyping it up," the basic idea is the same: a lot of excited attention is being created around it.
