expect

A2
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ɛkspˈɛkt/

US

  • /ɪkˈspɛkt/

Description

To expect something is to think it will happen, often because of past experience or clear signs. You might expect a package in the mail if you've ordered something online, or expect rain if dark clouds gather overhead. It is more than just hoping; there is usually some reason to believe it.

Sometimes, expect also shows a demand or a sense of duty. A teacher might expect students to complete their homework, and parents expect children to be polite. You can also expect something from someone, as in "I expect honesty from my friends." Be careful, though. Expectations that are too high can lead to disappointment. As the saying goes, "Hope for the best, but expect the worst."
