It creeps in when things aren't quite clear. It's that little voice whispering, "Are you sure?" Maybe you question the weather forecast before a picnic, or perhaps you aren't sure whether you locked the front door. This feeling isn't always negative; it can be healthy to question things. A detective might question a witness's story, and a scientist may question an early result until there is better proof. It's that space between believing and being sure. Doubt is a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction about something, whether it's a fact, an idea, a person, or even yourself. You might cast doubt on someone's claims or express your doubts openly. A legal system relies on reasonable doubt to ensure justice is served, meaning there must be enough uncertainty that a jury cannot say a defendant is guilty with confidence.

So whether it's a brief hesitation or a deep sense of uncertainty, doubt is the space where certainty fades and questioning begins, a fundamental part of being human.
