Distraction refers to anything that pulls your focus away from what you're trying to do or think about. It's the state of being diverted from a task, goal, or train of thought. Think of it like a magnet pulling iron filings—your attention is the iron, and the distraction is the magnet.

Distractions can be external—things happening around you like noise, movement, or other people. A buzzing phone, a chatty coworker, or a captivating billboard are all common examples. However, distractions can also be internal—thoughts, worries, or daydreams that pop into your head.
