The word "defile" carries the sense of violation and corruption. It means to pollute, desecrate, or dishonor something—often something considered pure, sacred, or highly valued. Historically, the idea of defile has included physical pollution, like bringing filth into a clean or holy place. Over time, the meaning has broadened to cover many kinds of moral and symbolic harm as well.

You might read about a landscape defiled by pollution, where once-clear waters are now choked with waste. Or a historical monument could be defiled by vandalism, losing dignity and meaning. "Defile" is also frequently used figuratively for the corruption of morals or principles. A politician accused of taking bribes might see their reputation defiled by scandal. Similarly, someone who betrays deep trust could be said to have defiled a sacred bond of friendship.

Interestingly, "defile" is also a noun in military history: it means a narrow passage through mountains, woods, or a valley. Armies may be forced to move through a defile in single file, making them vulnerable to attack. This noun sense is separate from the verb meaning and is usually clear from context in historical writing.

Whether it is a physical place, a moral code, or a cherished relationship, to defile is to taint, corrupt, or violate what should stay pure, leaving behind dishonor or deep harm.
