A belch – often called a burp – is the noisy expulsion of gas from your stomach through your mouth. It's rarely intentional, frequently embarrassing, and usually happens after eating or drinking something too quickly! While generally considered impolite in most social settings, a hearty belch can sometimes be a sign of satisfaction after a big meal (though you might want to keep that to yourself!).

Beyond the human body, the word is also used to describe objects that eject something forcefully. You might see a factory chimney belching thick smoke into the air or an old car engine belching exhaust. In both cases, whether it is your body or a machine, a belch is a sudden, unmistakable way of releasing built-up pressure.

A belch is the forceful release of gas from the stomach through the esophagus and out of the mouth. It is a natural bodily function, though often considered socially unacceptable in polite company. While we might try to stifle it, many people still belch—on average several times a day—especially after meals. Historically, cultural views on belching have varied. In some traditions, it was even considered a sign of appreciation—a way to show a host that the meal was satisfying. However, in most modern Western societies, covering your mouth or excusing yourself is the expected etiquette.

In a broader sense, "belch" describes the violent or voluminous emission of fire, smoke, or gas from an opening. In literature, a volcano might "belch" lava, or a dragon might "belch" flames. This imagery is also used to characterize people or settings; a character's loud, boisterous belch can be used for comedic relief or to show they are boorish and lacking manners. Whether it is a rough-and-tumble adventurer at a tavern or a steam engine chugging along the tracks, a belch represents a powerful and often uncouth release of energy.
