flatulence

B1
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /flˈætjʊləns/

US

  • /flˈætʃələns/

Description

This word refers to gas passing out of the body through the anus, more commonly called farting. It is a normal body process, even if people often feel awkward talking about it. Certain foods, such as beans, cabbage, or dairy, can make it happen more often. A little gas after eating is common, but if it happens a lot or comes with pain, it may point to a digestion problem. You probably would not mention it at a formal dinner, but it is something doctors talk about often.
