Appeasement refers to the act of giving in to demands—often from an aggressor—in order to avoid immediate conflict. It is a complex concept most often associated with politics and diplomacy, though it also applies to everyday psychology.

The core idea behind appeasement is that by conceding certain points, you can prevent further escalation or outright hostility. However, it is rarely seen as a positive long-term solution. Critics argue that appeasement simply delays inevitable conflict and often emboldens the aggressor, leading to even greater demands in the future.

The most famous—and controversial—example is the foreign policy adopted by Britain and France toward Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain believed that giving Hitler what he wanted—specifically, territory in Czechoslovakia—would satisfy him and prevent a global war. This strategy failed catastrophically when Germany invaded Poland in 1939, triggering World War II. Because of this historical context, the word "appeasement" often carries a negative connotation, suggesting weakness or misguided compromise.

However, appeasement isn't always about international politics. You might "appease" a grumpy neighbor by turning your music down, or "appease" a crying pet with a treat. In these cases, it simply means satisfying someone's immediate needs to maintain peace. In more general usage, appeasement can also mean calming or satisfying something like anger, fear, or even hunger (for example, "the appeasement of hunger"), though that use is less common.

So, whether you're discussing historical tragedies or everyday interactions, appeasement is about making concessions—but it requires carefully considering whether giving in now will truly solve the problem, or just make it worse later.
