Resistance describes the act of opposing something—whether it's a physical force, an idea, or authority. It is about pushing back against pressure, control, or change. Think of a tight rubber band: when you pull on it, it offers resistance, fighting against your effort to stretch it further.

This idea extends far beyond physics. In history, resistance often takes the form of rebellion or protest, like the Civil Rights Movement opposing segregation or American colonists opposing British rule. These are active forms of resistance involving direct opposition and struggle. However, resistance can also be passive: refusing to cooperate with an unjust system, holding onto your beliefs in the face of peer pressure, or simply keeping your individuality.

The word also has technical applications. It describes a material's ability to oppose the flow of electricity (electrical resistance) or the force that slows down movement through a fluid (fluid resistance). In psychology, resistance refers to a patient's unconscious opposition to the therapeutic process, often as a way to avoid painful memories.

So, whether it is a physical barrier, a political struggle, or an internal conflict, resistance is about actively or passively opposing a force and striving to maintain your position, beliefs, or freedom. It is the force that says "no," even when faced with overwhelming pressure.
