To warp means to twist out of shape, bend, or distort, often because of pressure, heat, or other outside forces. Originally, it referred to physical objects like wood or metal becoming bent and misshapen. Think of a warped floorboard in an old house. Over time, the word also came to describe changes in less physical things.

A classic example is how moisture affects wood: "The humidity caused the door frame to warp, making it difficult to close." But you can also warp a story, meaning to twist the facts or tell it in a misleading way. A person's beliefs can be warped by propaganda or biased information. "Years of isolation had warped his sense of reality" suggests that his view of the world had become distorted and unhealthy.

The idea behind "warping" is a move away from what is natural, straight, or true. It implies an alteration that changes something in a deep way. In science fiction, you might hear about "warp speed," a way to bend space itself to travel faster than light.

So whether it is a physical object bending under stress, a story being twisted for effect, or someone's perspective becoming distorted, to warp is to change from an original form in a way that is often harmful or damaging.
