To distort means to twist out of its normal shape or appearance, often resulting in a misleading or inaccurate representation. It can apply to physical objects – like metal bent by force, or a photograph stretched and warped – but also to sound (a voice or music that comes through unclear) and to abstract things like information, ideas, or even memories.

For example: "The heat distorted the image on the road, making it look like water." This refers to a physical distortion. But you can also say, "The media distorted his words," meaning they presented them in a way that changed their original meaning. Or, "Years later, her memory of the event had become distorted," suggesting that time and retelling had altered her recollection.

Distortion isn't always intentional. Sometimes it happens naturally – like how perspective can distort size in a photograph. But often, distortion is used deliberately to mislead or manipulate. A political cartoon might distort someone's features to make them look foolish, while propaganda distorts facts to influence public opinion.

The word comes from the Latin distorquere, meaning "to twist." Think of it as taking something straight and bending it until it's no longer true to its original form. So whether you're talking about a warped reflection, a twisted story, or a bent piece of metal, distortion always involves a deviation from accuracy or normalcy.
