These ideas shaped Western thought for centuries. Many religious traditions also place great importance on virtue, presenting moral behavior as part of a faithful or spiritually healthy life.

In modern English, we use "virtue" both as a general term for moral excellence and to point to a specific admirable trait. You might say that honesty is a virtue, or that patience is one of her greatest virtues. In older or more formal English, the word can also describe personal purity, especially in phrases like "a woman of virtue," though that use is less central in everyday speech now. The word also appears in newer expressions such as "virtue signaling," which usually means publicly showing moral opinions in a way that seems more concerned with appearance than sincere action.

The word also has a broader meaning that is not always moral. A virtue can be a good quality or practical strength in a thing, idea, or method. For example, "the chief virtue of the tool is its simplicity" means that simplicity is its main advantage. A related idiomatic phrase is "by virtue of," which means "because of" or "on the basis of." Someone might sit on a board by virtue of their position as CEO. In that sense, the word points to a quality, right, or condition that gives someone a certain power or place. So depending on the context, "virtue" may describe moral goodness, a specific admirable trait, personal purity in an older sense, or simply a useful strength or advantage.
