It suggests a deliberate attempt to answer a wrong with suffering, often driven by anger, resentment, and a strong feeling that justice must be done.

Historically, vengeance was often seen as a personal right. People were expected to answer wrongs done to themselves or their families. Modern legal systems usually reject private vengeance and place punishment in the hands of courts and laws instead. One reason is clear: unchecked acts of revenge can quickly grow into long cycles of violence.

Although people sometimes feel that punishment brings closure, vengeance is usually linked to harmful consequences. Forgiveness or simply moving on is often seen as a healthier path than holding on to resentment. Whether in ancient feuds or modern conflicts, vengeance names the human urge to strike back for a perceived wrong, even when that choice brings a heavy personal cost.
