"Variably" describes something that changes or happens in different ways depending on the situation, rather than in one fixed way. Think of the weather: rain does not always come at the same time or with the same force each day. It may fall heavily, lightly, or not at all. A chef might season a dish variably depending on how fresh the ingredients are. In the same way, people react to stress variably; one person may become quiet, while another becomes upset.

Imagine you're building with Lego bricks. If you always use the same size brick in the same pattern, that is consistent. But if you change the sizes and colors depending on what looks best at each moment, you're working variably.
