"Understand" is a simple word, but it has several important uses. At its core, it means to know the meaning of something, such as words, ideas, instructions, or a situation. It often suggests more than just hearing or reading something. It means that the message is clear in your mind and that you can see not only what is happening, but also why.

Think about learning to ride a bike. At first, you may hear the instructions: "pedal forward, keep your balance." Later, after practice, you fully understand because you have felt how it works in real life. In this way, the word can describe both mental knowledge and practical sense.

We also use "understand" when talking about people and feelings. If you say, "I understand how you feel," you usually mean that you see the reason for someone's feelings or that you feel sympathy for them. And when someone asks, "Do you understand?" they are often checking that their explanation was clear.
