A target is not just something you shoot at with arrows. It is anything you aim for: a goal, a point you want to reach, or even a person someone is trying to harm. Think of a runner heading for the finish line; that line is the target. Or think of a bully picking on someone weaker; sadly, that person becomes the target of the bully's aggression. The word comes from Old French, where it first referred to a small shield, and later to the mark archers shot at. Today, it is used in many ways, from marketing ("target audience") to military strategy ("targeting" enemy positions).

The word "target" has grown far beyond its original meaning of a physical object used in archery or shooting practice. At its core, a target is the end point of an action or effort: a goal you are trying to reach. For example: "Her target was to finish the marathon in under four hours."

However, "target" also has a darker side. It can refer to someone who is being deliberately harmed, threatened, or attacked. The sentence "The activist became the target of online harassment" shows this negative use. This meaning comes from the idea of aiming something at someone with harmful intent.

In business and marketing, "target" can describe a specific group of people you want to reach with your product or service: a "target audience." For instance: "The company's target demographic is young adults aged 18-25."

In military contexts, "targeting" refers to the process of identifying and selecting specific enemy positions or assets for attack. In this sense, it is about precision: "The pilots were given precise targeting coordinates."

So, whether it is a personal ambition, a marketing plan, or a dangerous threat, a target is something being aimed at, whether with hope, focus, or harmful intent. It is about direction, purpose, and the specific point where effort finally lands.
