A baseline is essentially a starting point or a fixed standard used for comparison. It is the initial value or level of something against which future changes are measured. Think of it as establishing a "before" picture so you can clearly see the "after." Without a baseline, it is impossible to accurately track progress or quantify success.

The term originated in surveying and mapmaking, referring to a precisely surveyed line serving as a reference for all other measurements. Over time, its meaning has broadened considerably across many fields. In science, a baseline is established before an experiment—such as measuring a patient's resting heart rate before testing a new medication. In business, last year's revenue acts as the baseline to determine if the current year is successful. In environmental studies, a baseline assessment measures the condition of an ecosystem before development occurs to ensure any impact can be monitored.

Figuratively, "baseline" can also refer to essential or fundamental principles or a minimum acceptable level. For example, "Honesty is a baseline requirement for any relationship," implies that without it, the relationship has no foundation. Or, "The company set a baseline profit goal," meaning the absolute minimum they need to achieve. Whether you are tracking growth, establishing standards, or defining fundamentals, a baseline provides the crucial reference point—a solid foundation upon which to build and measure success.
