To sue is to start a legal case against another person or organization, called the defendant, because you believe they have done something wrong and the court should provide a remedy. That remedy might be money for harm or loss, an injunction (a court order telling someone to stop doing something), or specific performance (a court order requiring someone to carry out a contract).

The process usually begins when a complaint is filed in court. That document explains the problem and says what result the person filing the case wants. The defendant then has a chance to respond, and the case may move through several stages, including discovery, where both sides gather evidence, and sometimes a trial.

Although people often connect it with money disputes, such as breach of contract or personal injury claims, legal action can be taken over many issues, including discrimination, defamation (damaging someone's reputation), property damage, and copyright infringement.

It is important to note that simply threatening to sue is not the same as actually filing a lawsuit. While many people can file a complaint, winning a case requires enough evidence and careful attention to legal rules and procedures.

When you hear someone say they are going to "sue," it usually signals a serious step in a conflict: a formal effort to solve the dispute through the legal system. The process can be slow, expensive, and uncertain, but it is sometimes necessary to protect rights or seek justice.
