Imagine a courtroom drama: someone feels they have been wronged and decides to take the matter to court. That person, the one bringing the case, is the *plaintiff*. They are the party starting the lawsuit, saying another person or company caused harm and asking the court for help, often money for the loss or injury. You would not use this word in everyday talk; it is mainly a legal term. Think of it as the opposite of the "defendant," who must answer the case. A plaintiff might be someone hurt in a car accident suing the other driver, or a business owner suing another company for breaking a contract.

The *plaintiff* is the party who starts a legal case against another party, usually called the defendant, in civil court. In simple terms, this is the person or group saying, "I was harmed, and I want the court to do something about it." The harm might be physical, emotional, or financial, and it may come from what the defendant did or failed to do.

This can happen in many situations: a car accident, a broken contract, defamation, medical malpractice, or many other disputes. The plaintiff must present facts and evidence to show why the defendant should be held responsible. In many cases, the plaintiff asks for money damages, but they may also ask the court for some other legal remedy.

You usually will not hear "plaintiff" outside a formal legal setting. You would not say, "My friend is a plaintiff because she's upset with me." The word is used for someone involved in a real court case, most often a civil lawsuit. For example: "The plaintiff argued that the company's negligence caused her injuries," or "The judge ruled in favor of the plaintiff and awarded $50,000 in damages." Knowing this word makes legal news, true-crime reports, and courtroom stories much easier to follow.
