study

A1
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /stˈʌdi/

US

  • /ˈstədi/

Description

To study isn't just about cracking open books (though that's often part of it!). It means to dedicate time and effort to learning about a subject, whether it's history, music, or even the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe. A dedicated astronomer might study the stars for years, while a student studies diligently for an upcoming exam.

You can study something formally, by taking classes at school, or informally, by teaching yourself to play guitar. Sometimes, "to study" means simply looking at something very carefully. A detective might study a crime scene for clues. The word also has noun forms: a study can be a quiet room for reading or work, and it can also mean a piece of research on a subject.
