The word "squash" is surprisingly versatile! At its core, it means to press something forcefully so it becomes flatter, smaller, or misshapen. Imagine squeezing a soft object until it loses its shape: that's squashing it. For instance, "She accidentally squashed her hat in the crowded train" implies the object was damaged by pressure.

Beyond physical pressure, "squash" can also mean to stop something completely or forcefully. A government might "squash a rebellion," meaning it puts down an uprising with strong action. You can also squash an idea, a protest, or even a rumor before it grows.

Most people, however, probably associate "squash" with the delicious family of vegetables! These come in many shapes and colors—butternut squash, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, and zucchini are just a few examples. They're often roasted, pureed into soups, or used in pies. Interestingly, the vegetable gets its name from a Narragansett Native American word, askútasquash, which roughly translates to "a green thing eaten raw."

Finally, there's squash as a sport! Played with racquets and a small, hollow rubber ball, the goal is to hit the ball against the walls so your opponent cannot return it. The sport earned its name because the ball is soft; unlike the hard balls used in earlier racquet games, this one "squashes" flat against the wall when struck hard.
