The word "soak" revolves around the idea of penetration and absorption. Most commonly, it means to immerse something in liquid for a period of time until it is thoroughly saturated. We soak dried beans before cooking them, soak stained clothes to loosen dirt, or enjoy a long, relaxing soak in a hot bathtub after a stressful day.

Beyond physical immersion, "soak" also describes the act of absorbing something into oneself. A sponge soaks up a spill, just as an eager student soaks up information during a fascinating lecture. This figurative use extends to experiences as well; you might soak up the atmosphere of a new city or soak up the sun on a warm afternoon.
