save

A1
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /sˈeɪv/

US

  • /ˈseɪv/

Description

To save something is not just about putting money in the bank. It can mean protecting it from harm, rescuing it from danger, or keeping it for future use. You might save a life by pulling someone from a burning building, save your allowance to buy a new bike, or save time by taking a shortcut.

The word traces its roots back through Old French to the Latin salvare, meaning "to make safe." Think of a knight saving a princess: he is keeping her safe. Or think of the phrase "saved by the bell," which means being rescued from an unpleasant situation at the last moment. In modern life, we save data on our computers so our work is not lost, and we try to save face after a mistake so we do not feel embarrassed in public.
