To be reticent means to be reserved, reluctant to speak freely, or hesitant in disclosing information. It suggests a deliberate choice to remain silent or say very little, often due to caution, modesty, or a desire for privacy. Unlike someone who is simply shy, a reticent person isn't necessarily unable to speak – they are choosing not to.

The word comes from the Latin "reticere," meaning "to be silent." Historically, it carried a sense of holding back information that one was obligated to share, but today it's more often used simply to describe someone who is naturally reserved.

You might say, "He was reticent about his past," implying he didn't want to talk about it. Or, "She gave a reticent reply," meaning her answer was brief and unrevealing. It can also be used to describe a general disposition: "A reticent nature is often mistaken for aloofness."

Reticence isn't always negative; sometimes it's a sign of thoughtfulness or discretion. However, in certain situations, like during an investigation, excessive reticence might raise suspicion. Think of characters in literature who are known for their quiet intensity and carefully guarded secrets; they often embody this quality.
