The word raw describes something in its most basic, natural, or unprocessed form. It often implies a lack of refinement, preparation, or protection. We most commonly use it with food: raw vegetables have not been cooked, and eating them can be quite a different experience from enjoying their cooked counterparts. One might say, "She prefers her steak rare, almost raw."

However, raw extends far beyond the kitchen. It describes anything in its original state—unrefined materials like raw silk, raw sewage, or raw lumber. When a performance or a piece of writing is described as raw, it suggests a lack of sophistication or subtlety, often trading technical perfection for sheer, honest energy.
