Something that is rare does not happen often, is not easy to find, or exists in very small numbers. Think of a coin that almost never appears in shops or collections. The word often suggests that something feels special because there is so little of it. A collector may look for rare stamps, and a doctor may study a rare disease. It can also describe food, especially meat that is cooked only a little, like a rare steak. You would not usually say "a rare cold," but you would say "a rare genetic condition."

Whether you are talking about a precious gem, a natural ability, an illness, or a piece of meat cooked lightly, rare points to something that is not common.
