admit

A2
verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ədmˈɪt/

US

  • /ədˈmɪt/

Description

To admit something can mean several things! You might admit you were wrong after an argument—confessing to a mistake. Or, a museum might admit visitors during certain hours—allowing people to enter. It can also mean to acknowledge the truth of something, like "She admitted she was nervous." Think of it as opening up—either a door or your heart (or both!).

If someone asks you a direct question and you admit that the answer is yes, you're being honest. A hospital might admit a patient for treatment. And in legal terms, to admit evidence means to officially accept it as part of a case. So, context is key!
