The word raise is surprisingly versatile, encompassing both physical elevation and abstract increases. At its core, raise means to lift something to a higher position: "She raised her voice to be heard over the crowd," or "The crane raised the heavy container onto the ship."

However, raise extends beyond just lifting. It also signifies an increase in quantity, amount, or level. "The company decided to raise its prices" means they increased the cost. You can raise a question—meaning to bring it up for discussion—or raise your hand to signal you have something to say.

A particularly common usage is raising money, which refers to collecting funds for a specific purpose, like charity or political campaigns. For example, "They are trying to raise $10,000 for the new playground."

It's important not to confuse raise with rise. While both involve upward movement, raise is a transitive verb, meaning it is an action you do to something else (you raise your hand). In contrast, rise is intransitive and describes something moving upwards on its own (the sun rises).
