Pronunciation

UK

  • /lˈəʊ/

US

  • /ˈloʊ/

Description

"Low" is a very flexible word. It can describe something near the ground, like the low branches of a tree. It can also describe sound, as in a low hum or a low voice, meaning quiet or deep. A low mood means feeling sad, and low energy means you do not feel very active.

The word also works for amounts and levels. A low price is cheap, and a low score or low supply means there is not much. Sometimes it has a moral sense too: a low trick or a low blow is unfair and mean. In most cases, it suggests being below the usual level in height, amount, sound, spirit, or behavior.
